Lack of ambition

NCEA came out here yesterday (for those out of NZ that is our marks for passing papers at school).

I was talking to a 15 year old girl yesterday, who had just read her results on the computer. She was so happy she’d passed them all. So I asked what she was doing this year at school. She said that she had passed this year so that was it, she wanted to go off and work. I asked what she wanted to be, and she said a receptionist.

I was blown away.

I don’t think that there is anything wrong with being a receptionist, hell, my first job out of school was a medical receptionist, but still, I had more ambition then that. I knew I wanted to do something one day. And I did. I went back to university later on and did the papers I wanted too.

But that’s it, no future plans, that’s what she wants to do. And when I asked her why – cos she doesn’t want to damage her nails.
